Heads of three UN food agencies to visit Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, August 31, 2017 (FBC) – The heads of three UN food agencies are scheduled to visit Ethiopia tomorrow.

During their visit, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva, President of IFAD Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo and WFP Executive Director David Beasley will discuss support for drought-affected parts of Ethiopia.

The UN officials are expected to meet drought-affected people and their children, who are receiving food rations as well as visit food distribution centers for livestock in Ethiopian Somali regional state, KUNA quoted a joint statement released as saying yesterday.

The trio will also visit Addis Ababa, where they will discuss the matter with Ethiopian officials, UN and other partner organizations.

Despite Ethiopian government response efforts, the statement urged the international community to provide urgently needed additional efforts and support to prevent the impact of the drought.

About 8.5 million people in Ethiopia are in need of food assistance due to the drought that hit south and southeast parts of the country.
