US Acting Assistant Secretary of State praises Ethiopia’s role in Africa's collective progress

Addis Ababa, December 8, 2017 (FBC) - US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Donald Yamamato praised Ethiopia’s efforts to achieve peace, democracy, development and integration in Africa.

“Ethiopia’s regional as well as continental efforts demonstrate the country’s resolve to continue to play a pivotal role in Africa's collective progress to achieve peace, democracy, development and integration in the continent,” he said while meeting Foreign Minister Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu yesterday.

He said it was best epitomized by Ethiopia’s forward-looking efforts both in bilateral as well as multilateral foras on climate change, peace and security, economic development, among others.

Recalling his encounter with Ethiopian peacekeeping forces in Mogadishu and elsewhere who carry out their duties under the auspices of the UN, AU and IGAD, the Ambassador said their duties adhere to a high degree of discipline with daring sacrifice to fast witness the unnecessary loss of the lives of their brothers and sisters.

Taking note of the fact that Ethiopia has made a genuine progress endeavor towards meeting National as well as Global development goals, Ambassador Don Yamamato stressed on the need to sustain the remarkable growth in the country “which therefore entails a deeper commitment.

“The Acting Assistant Secretary underscored the need to forge an inclusive growth that can considerably make the youth a part of the “extraordinary” development in the country.

The Acting Assistant Secretary noted his government’s full-fledged support towards the IGAD led Revitalization Process in South Sudan calling for all parties to the peace process to be fully committed to it to once-and-for-all close the chapter of the misery of the people of South Sudan.

He has commended the progress being witnessed in Somalia and called for agile vigilance to fast track the development of the country towards a stable and prosperous Somalia.

Two days before his visit to Ethiopia Ambassador Yamamato was in Mogadishu to attend the Somalia Security Pact Review headed by Formajo.

Dr. Workneh for his part commended the government of the U.S. for being a reliable, historical partner in Ethiopia’s unflinching efforts in ensuring tranquility, economic development and collective responsibility within and outside the country.

He briefed Yamamato and his delegation on the ongoing efforts of the government in transforming the countries untapped natural as well as human resources to best sustain the remarkable economic growth and achieve the country’s ambition to join the middle-income countries by 2025.

Foreign Minister noted his Government’s due consideration to the sizable youth-joblessness and its insistent efforts in putting in place the necessary strategies to assuage the problem.

Speaking on issues of regional common concern, Dr. Workneh assured his U.S. side the positive progresses seen in South Sudan regarding the revitalization process and called on for more support to ensure stability in the country.

Ambassador Yamamato has also held talks with Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and the AU officials about regional concerns, including food security, peacekeeping and refugee matters.
