Ethiopia to drop charges, free imprisoned politicians

Addis Ababa, Janaury 3,2017 (FBC) –Chief administrators of the four member parties of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) today issued a joint press conference on current national and regional issues.

In order to build national consensus and widen the democratic platform, a decision has been made to drop charges and pardon imprisoned politicians and individuals, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said at the event.

The decision also includes pardoning previously sentenced politicians.

A decision has also been made for the closure of a center commonly known as Maekelawi which the Derg regime had been using to torture people under the guise of investigation.

The center will be turned into a museum.

As a replacement, an investigation center which meets international standard was built as per the proclamation approved by the House of People’s Representatives (HPR).
