Ethiopia’s decision to release suspects is a tangible step toward its stated goal of widening political space for all Ethiopians: US

Addis Ababa, January 16, 2018 (FBC) –The U.S. government has welcomed Ethiopian government's decision to release suspects.

Attorney General Getachew Ambaye yeterday announced that charges against 528 suspects, including Dr Merera Gudina and Dr Wolderufael Disasa, have been dropped.

The announcement came following the decisions made by heads of the four member parties of EPRDF to pardon some politicians and individuals in order to build national consensus and widen the political space.

The suspects will be released beginning from tomorrow after two days of rehabilitation.

“We are encouraged by the Ethiopian government’s decision to drop charges and pardon detainees, including political leaders, as a tangible step toward its stated goal of widening political space for all Ethiopians,” the US embassy said in a statement sent to FBC today

“We are aware that reviews of additional cases are underway, and hope they will be conducted in the same spirit,” it added.

The statement further added that “we understand these efforts as part of the government’s decision to accelerate democratic progress, and stand ready to work with all Ethiopians who share the goal of ensuring that all citizens are empowered to build a brighter future for their country.”
