Ethiopia releases suspects, including Dr Merera Gudina

Addis Ababa, January 17, 2018 (FBC) – Ethiopia today released 115 suspects who were detained at the federal level.

Among the released suspects include Dr Merera Gudina and Dr Rufael Disasa.

Speaking to FBC after his release, Dr Merera said the measure is a step forward by the government to build national consensus.

“It will be good if the government conducts honest negotiation with political forces that have massive support so as to create a democratic Ethiopia that accommodates all equally,” he said.

Dr Merera described government's measure as “a good beginning.”

Attorney General Getachew Ambaye this week announced that charges against 528 suspects have been dropped.

The announcement came following the decisions made by heads of the four member parties of EPRDF to pardon some politicians and individuals in order to build national consensus and widen the political space.

According to him, 115 of the suspects are those who were detained at the federal level.

The remaining suspects are from SNNP regional state.
