Gov't striving to make labor benefit from increasing flow of investment: PM

Addis Ababa January 17, 2018 (FBC) - The government of Ethiopia is striving to create conducive work environment for the labor force to benefit from the increasing flow of investment, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said.

During a discussion he held with Sharan Burrow, Secretary-General of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) today, the premier also said improving the live hood of citizens is the priority of the government.

He further pointed out that the government is committed to enhance social dialogue with the labor force by supporting the workers constitutional right to organize and negotiate on wages and other benefits.

ITUC Secretary-General Sharan Burrow said on her part the government's approach to enhance the country's development seizing the opportunities and investment potential is appreciable and social dialogue is also important to strengthen workers capacity.

"I think your prime Minster has a very sound approach which is a balance of development using the opportunities of investment potential. But insuring the workers right and fair wages are parts of that equation," she added.

According to her, building the capacity of workers to get organized and negotiate with employers is important. Social dialogue between the government and the unions is important for the working people of this country, Burrow stressed.

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) is a global organization which works on workers’ rights and interests, through international cooperation between trade unions, global campaigning and advocacy.
