Efforts underway to restore durable peace in conflict-affected areas

Addis Ababa, February 2, 2018 (FBC) –Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO), Dr Negeri Lencho, said efforts are underway to restore durable peace in conflict-affected areas of north Wollo zone, Amhara regional state.

In a press conference issued on current affairs today, the minister stated that the conflicts that occurred recently in three towns of the zone have resulted in damages to infrastructures and losses of life.

Gaps in leaderships, lack of adequate responses for the question of the people for development and youth unemployment were mentioned as reasons for the conflict.

He said those responsible for the counflicts are facing jucitice, he said.

He further said the government is investigating rumors that security forces have acted improperly at the conflict in Woldia town. If they are found guilty, they will be held accountable, he said.

The Federal Security Council is investigating the situation and the results will be made public once completed, he added.

He said the three towns affected by the conflicts, namely Woldia, Kobo and Mersa, have returned to stability.

He said significant development gains were made and jobs were created for the youth as a result of the broad activities undertaken to bring about an all-round transformation and ensure benefits of the people.

Despite this impressive growth, there are still unresolved problems and gaps, especially in poverty reduction and employment creation for youth as well as problems of good governance and rent seeking, the minister said.

The government is resolute to address these and other related problems, Dr Negeri said.

He finally called on the public to be vigilant and distance themselves from those who want to use them as an instrument for their own agenda.
