Premier calls on political parties to come out of feelings of resentment, work with new spirit

Addis Ababa, April 12, 2018 (FBC) –Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed lauded efforts of competing political parties to become an alternative for the public.

The Premier made the remark yesterday when he hosted heads of opposition parties, civic societies, and religious leaders at the National Palace.

The Premier said political parties should come out of feelings of resentment and work with a new spirit.

The ruling party EPRDF is ready to negotiate with any political party that wants to hold talks peacefully, the Premier said.

Efforts would be made to broaden the political space and create fertile ground for opposition political parties, he said.

EPRDF will do all it can to make the upcoming election free, fair and democratic, he said, urging oppositions to do their part for its success.

EPRDF’s interest to see strong opposition parties stem from its desire to become a strong party, besides building democracy and widening the political space, the Premier indicated

The political space should be broadened as parliamentary democracy could not be successful without political parties, Prime Minister Abiy added.

Opposition political parties should come up with comprehensive policies and become competent, he said, further highlighting that a zero-sum politics can make the country pay a price.
