Prime Minister Dr Abiy holds discussion with residents of Mekelle city and its environs

Addis Ababa, April 13, 2018 (FBC) - Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, who arrived in Mekelle city for an official working visit this morning, held talks with various members of the society residing in Tigray regional state.

Dwellers of the city and its environs as well as representatives drawn from various zone of the regional state attended the discussion held at the martyrs’ hall.

Speaking on the occasion, the Premier said “it is impossible to think of Ethiopia without Tigray and vice versa.”

Natives of Tigray regional state defended their country from external aggression as well as scarified for freedom, democracy, and unity of the country, he said.

After urging the people to divert their attention towards peace and developmens, the Premier pledged to work to respond to questions of the residents for development and good governance.

Deputy Chief Administrator of Tigray regional state, Dr Debretsion Gebremichael, said Dr Abiy Ahmed’s election as Chairperson of EPRDF and Prime Minister of Ethiopia was democratic and Constitutional.

The power transition was conducted pursuant to the Constitution, peacefully and democratically, he added. The country is on the right track to its renaissance, he added.

The deputy chief administrator said natives of Tigray were targeted in the attack committed by some groups in Amhara and Oromia regional states in the past two and three years.

Displacement of people should be ceased and free movement of citizens should be guaranteed, he said.

The regional state would provide support for efforts to return people displaced in various parts of the country to their village, he said, further underscoring the need to resolve conflicts and differences through dialogue.

High ranking government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, EPRDF office head Shiferaw Shigute as well as religious leaders and scholars, among others attended the event held at the martyrs’ hall.

Ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Dr Abiy laid wreath at the martyrs' monument.
