Ministry distributing 142 Gene Xperts

Addis Ababa, May 14, 2018 (FBC) –The Ministry of Health (MoH) said it is distributing 142 Gene Xperts machines that are used to diagnosis drug resistant tuberculosis (TB), in addition to the 173 machines that are currently in use across the country.

Getcahew Aga, Laboratory Technical Advisor at the Ministry’s TV Program, told Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) the devices are being distributed in all regional states and two city administrations.

The price of each machine is over 20,000 US dollars, he said, adding they would help reduce workload as each machine is able to test up to 12 samples in a day, besides enabling patients to receive efficient health services.

Getcahew indicated that the devices can also be used to test individuals suspected of having cancer, multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV associated tuberculosis.

Works were also underway to raise the number of Gene Xperts up in the country to 400 by 2020, the advisor noted.

Moreover, efforts are underway to double the number of TB culture and drug susceptibility testing (DST) laboratories. The country planned to build 10 more laboratories in the coming two years.

Works were also underway to meet WHO’s standard, which recommends 1 culture lab per 5 million population.
