Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem

Addis Ababa, May 16, 2018 (FBC) - Guatemala has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the United States, which inaugurated its embassy in the city two days prior.

The inauguration of the Guatemalan embassy was attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, according to Aljazeera.

Morales said Guatemala was sending a message of "love, peace and fraternity" to Israel amid praise from Netanyahu.

Guatemala, the second country to recognize Israel as a state in 1948, has had a long history of military cooperation with Israel.
