Dialogue on identity, national unity underway at Sheraton Addis

Addis Ababa, May 17, 2018 (FBC) –A high level dialogue on identity and national unity in Ethiopia kicked off at the Sheraton Addis today.

Organized jointly by Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Ethiopia office, the dialogue is underway with the theme “Building National Consensus through Promoting Unity within Diversity.”

In her opening remark, Muferihat Kamil, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), said the Constitution responds to question of identity of nations and nationalities of Ethiopia.

The Constitution also granted Ethiopians the rights to be administered by the people whom they delegated and chose, she said.

However, much work hasn’t been done towards producing a new generation which try hard for national unity and consensuses within diversity, the Speaker said, adding “the time is now to work to this end.”

During the event, different research papers that focused on gains, opportunities, and challenges of Ethiopia’s federal system were tabled for discussion.
