Fiche Chambalala celebration starts in Hawassa

Addis Ababa, June 12, 2018 (FBC) –Celebration of Fiche Chambalala, New Year festival of the Sidama people, started in the city of Hawassa, the capital of SNNP regional state today.

Representatives drawn from various woredas (districts) of Sidama zone will stage various communal events, including cultural dances, irrespective of age and gender, at the festival to be held in Hawassa until tomorrow.

According to culture and tourism bureau of the regional state, the festival will be celebrated in all districts of Sidama zone for two consecutive weeks.

Deputy head of the bureau, Lema Mesele, told FBC that his bureau will seize the opportunity to promote the culture of the regional state to foreign visitors coming to attend the celebration.

Fiche Chamballala was registered as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015.
