Eight individuals sentenced up to nine years in prison on charges of terror attacks

Addis Ababa, November 10, 2016 (FBC) –The Federal High Court Fourth Criminal Bench has sentenced 8 Somali nationals two to nine years in prison on charges of trying to carry out terror attacks in public areas in Addis Ababa.

The defendants were Ahmed Abdurahman, Mohamed Ahmed, Mohamed Abdulahi, Mohamed Ali, Anes Usman, Usman Hassen and Mohamed Awais.

They were accused of trying to carry out terror attacks at Bole Friendship building, Merkato, Edna mall and other areas after an illegal infiltration into Ethiopia and renting a house around Bole area in Addis Ababa.

They were charged for plotting a failed suicide bomb attack at the Addis Ababa Stadium during Ethiopia’s World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria in October 3, 2006 Ethiopian Calendar.

According to the charges filed against them, the defendants had been participating in terrorist attacks in Mogadishu, Somalia after becoming members of the terrorist group Al Shabaaba since 1999.
