Cornerstone laid for Yirgalem agro-processing industrial park

Addis Ababa, February 23, 2017 (FBC) – Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn today laid a cornerstone for the construction of an agro-processing industrial park at Yirgalem town, Sidama zone in the SNNP regional state.

The Premier said the industrial park will help process and supply to the global market Ethiopia’s well-known Sidamo, Yirgacheffe and Chire area coffee brands.

Industrial parks being built in various parts of the country show that Ethiopian farmers are shifting to surplus producers, he added.

Dr Mebrahtu Meles, state minister of industry, said the industrial park will rest on 1,000 hectares of land, of which 215 hectares will be developed earlier.

In addition to the rural transformation centers which will be established within 1,000 km radius, warehouses, laboratory and a one-stop center will be built in the park. It will also house 60 large and 120 medium size factories.

Upon going fully operational, the industrial park to be erected at a cost of 2.6 billion birr will benefits 166,000 people directly and 133,000 people indirectly.

The industrial park is expected to take two-three years for completion. Six related centers-three in Sidama and three in Gedio zones, will be established, it was noted.
