Court sentences 10 to jail for killing people after attacking vehicle headed to GERD

Addis Ababa, April 13, 2017 (FBC) – The Federal High Court Fourth Criminal Bench has sentenced 10 members of the Benishangul People’s Liberation Movement (BPLM) ranging from nine years to life imprisonment.

The ten individuals, including first and second defendants, Abdulwahib Mehadi Issa and Abdurahman Nasir, were found guilty of killing people after throwing hand grenade on a public transport vehicle headed to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

According to the charge sheets, the defendants crossed into Benishangul Gumuz regional state via Sudan three years ago after receiving military training in Eritrea and planning to carry out attacks on any vehicle headed to GERD.

On November 5, 2013, they killed 9 people and injured four others by throwing hand grenade on a minibus at Shedi Asheshel kebele (village), Sherkole woreda (district), it said.

Moreover, they killed 3 people engaged in incense extraction at the area and set fire on an ambulance on April 12, 2014.

The Fourth Criminal Bench today handed down life sentences to 1st -3rd defendants, 21 year in jail to 4th-6th defendants, 16 years jail term to 7th-9th defendants and a nine year prison term to the 10th defendant.
