Economic diplomacy will remain Ethiopia’s top priority, says PM Hailemariam

Addis Ababa, September 12, 2017 (FBC) –Economic diplomacy will remain Ethiopia’s top foreign relations priority area, said Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

He further said that the country will do its level best for regional peace and security.

The Premier was speaking at a discussion held with Ethiopian ambassadors, diplomats and senior heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

Ethiopian diplomats are expected to undertake more efforts to bring foreign direct investment (FDI), search for potential investors and accelerate technology transfer as per the plan set out in the second growth and transformation plan (GTP-II), he said.


PM Hailemariam further urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build its capacity and carry out strategic activities to accomplish its missions.

Ha also said that the ministry needs to work in partnership with other research institutes and  strengthen its public diplomacy to acquaint intellectuals, businesspersons, investors and the public at large with Ethiopia’s foreign relations.

The Prime Minister added that Ethiopia, under the umbrella of the Intergovernmental Authority of Development (IGAD), will toughen its efforts of maintaining peace and security in the Horn of Africa region.

At a meeting held in Addis Ababa and Hawassa town, SNNP regional state, Ethiopian ambassadors and diplomats evaluated performance of the diplomatic works carried out last Ethiopian fiscal year (2016/17) that ended on July 8.

They also conducted in-depth discussions on the plans for this fiscal year (2017/18).
