Amb. Hirut briefs EEAS Secretary General on current affairs

Addis Ababa, September 15, 2022 (FBC) – Hirut Zemene, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and E.U. institutions, met and exchanged views with Stefano Sannino, Secretary General of the European External Action Service.

On the occasion, Ambassador Hirut briefed the Secretary General on the current situation in Ethiopia, particularly focusing on the confidence-building measures that the Government of Ethiopia has been taking since the declaration of a unilateral indefinite humanitarian truce in March 2022, which was flagrantly violated by the TPLF leadership.

She also expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian problem in the northern part of Ethiopia and noted in this regard that the aggression in the Afrar and Amhara regions by the TPLF is the primary cause of the disruption of the delivery. Despite this difficult situation, she underlined the Governmemt’s determination to see the peaceful resolution of the conflict under the auspices of the African Union.

Secretary General Sannino, for his part, underscored the importance of resolving the conflict peacefully under the African Union leadership and reiterated the European Union’s commitment to support the peace process.
