Chief Admin of Amhara Regional State confers with OHCHR Regional Director

Addis Ababa, March 27, 2024 (FBC) – Chief Administrator of the Amhara Regional State, Arega Kebede, discussed with OHCHR Director of Eastern Africa and African Union, Marcel C. Akpovo on humanitarian situation in the region.

The two sides exchanged views on the damages caused by the conflict in the northern parts of the country and the handling of humanitarian rights in the in the context of the current situation in the region.

They also discussed devastation which has resulted from the current conflict in the region, and sought mechanisms to address the humanitarian need inflicted by the drought condition in the regional state.

Marcel C. Akpovo affirmed OHCHR’s commitment to work in collaboration with the regional government in providing technical and financial assistance to people in need.

The Regional Chief Administrator urged OHCHR to measure up to expectations arisen from the current situation in the region through adequate response to the humanitarian needs.

The Regional Director commended the efforts by the regional state to protect humanitarian rights in the region.

Marcel C. Akpovo also appreciated government’s ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict through peaceful ways as the two stressed the need to ensure effective accountability mechanisms for human rights violations.
