Congresswomen say the U.S. committed to sovereignty, unity of Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, September 18, 2021 (FBC) – During their meeting with the Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, the U.S. congresswomen Karen Bass and Sara Josephine Jacobs reaffirmed commitment of their country to sovereignty and unity of Ethiopia.

The congresswomen said the U.S. attaches great importance to its longstanding bilateral ties with Ethiopia, and committed to transform such a relationship in multifaceted areas of cooperation including economic and social spheres.

They said the U.S. also supports Ethiopia’s efforts to maintain peace and security in the country and the region, and preserve wellbeing of its people.

According to Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dina Mufti, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen briefed the U.S. congressional delegation on the genesis of the conflict in Tigray and reaffirmed commitment to solve the problem in a peaceful manner.

Demeke explained about the humanitarian crisis the terrorist TPLF brought about to innocent civilians in northern parts of the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister further reaffirmed the commitment of Ethiopia to enhance its longstanding and historical relationships with the U.S. in various areas of partnership.
