Efforts being made to promote electric cars: Ministry

Addis Ababa, August 16, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Transport and Logistics of Ethiopia (MoTL) stated that efforts are being made to promote electric vehicles in the country.

The Minister of State for Transport and Logistics, Ber’o Hasen, visited Belayneh Kinde Metallurgical and Engineering Complex, a car manufacturing and assembly facility in Gelan city.

It is stated that the Minister of State visited the electric vehicles assembled by the company.

After visiting the electric car assembling plant, Ber’o Hasen said that work is being done to put 148 thousand electric cars and 48 thousand buses into operation within 10 years.

He also mentioned that there are several indicators that the plan can be achieved ahead of schedule.

The government’s tax incentives on electric vehicles, the initiative of investors and the availability of renewable energy resources have contributed significantly to the rapid growth of the sector, he underscored.

Ber’o said that in order to expand charging centers for electric vehicles, consultations are being made with government institutions and city administrations to prepare a place for the centers to be built.

The State Minister mentioned that Belayneh Kinde Metallurgical and Engineering Complex is making a significant contribution to achieving the nation’s plan by producing and assembling electric cars.
