Ethiopia, Switzerland keen on deepening ties

Addis Ababa, January 18, 2024 (FBC) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, had a bilateral meeting with Federal Councillor for Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Ignazio Cassis.

On the occasion that took place in Davos, Switzerland, Mr. Demeke stressed that it is high time to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries in terms of economic and political fields.

The DPM & FM described how the adoption of the homegrown economic policy in Ethiopia has created enormous prospects for foreign investors, citing Switzerland as one of Ethiopia’s coffee export markets.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Switzerland has been essential in the multilateral arena, according to Deputy PM & FM Demeke, who expressed Ethiopia’s expectations that Switzerland would maintain its impartial stance on international issues brought before the council.

Ignazio Cassis, the Federal Councillor for Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, announced that he would visit Ethiopia in the middle of March 2024. He said the visit is a unique opportunity to further the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He further pledged to scale up the relationship on bilateral and international levels, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
