Fed supplying Tigray with necessary agricultural inputs, Regional Bureau says

Addis Ababa, June 8, 2021 (FBC) – Deputy Head of Tigray Interim Administration Agricultural Bureau, Araya Birhane said the federal government has been providing farmers of the region with the necessary agricultural inputs.

The Deputy Bureau Head said fertilizers, seeds and other agricultural technologies are being delivered to the region and distributed to the farmers.

The Deputy Head  disclosed that over 66,000 quintals of seeds of various crops have been secured of which 10,000 has already been distributed to farmers. The remaining will also be dispatched to farmers in 61 Woredas.

He also said that 300,000 quintals of fertilizer has been brought into the region via Djibouti port of which 210,000 quintals have been distributed to the farmers. Additional 500,000 quintals of fertilizer has been purchased and is on the way to the region for further distribution, he added.

The Interim Administration is aggressively working to involve 1.1 million farmers in the agricultural activity and cover 1.3 million ha of land with several varieties of crops.

He indicated that security forces are protecting the peace and security of the farmers from sporadic insurgencies of the terrorist TPLF group which is conspiring to disrupt agricultural practices in the region. He urged the community in the region to stand with the security forces to defend development activities from malicious acts of the terrorist group.

The government has so far stated that agricultural practices are being practiced on 70pct of the total arable land in the region.
