GERD 2nd filling addresses flooding, related risks in downstream courtiers

Addis Ababa, July 22, 2021 (FBC) – in a weekly press briefing the Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dina Mufti briefed journalists on latest developments in the country and the region at large including the GERD, situation in Tigray and other diplomatic and political affairs.

He underlined that the second filling of the dam has been successfully completed prior to its scheduled showing that the project will not pose any harm against downstream countries, he said, adding that the filling has played a significant role in addressing flooding and related problems in Sudan.

“Ethiopians are celebrating not because they fill the dam but it shows to the world that the truth has prevailed. The truth is that the filling of the dam would not significantly harm downstream countries” he said.

He added saying: “Neither Egypt nor Sudan has suffered harm because of it. Instead we believe that the filling has saved Sudan from excessive flooding. Had Egypt and Sudan been Negotiating in good faith, we would have reached a win agreement a long time ago”

Ethiopia still maintains its unwavering position on African Solution to African Problems, he said, adding that the nation is ready to take part the resumption of the trilateral negation proposed by the DRD.

He added that the two turbines of the project will start generating hydroelectric power soon.

On the other hand, he said leaders of various countries and organizations have sent congratulatory message to the Government and people of Ethiopia on the Successful conclusion of the sixth general elections. But, he said, some international figures and groups which are in the payroll list of TPLF are still refusing to accept positive steps in the country.

The second filling of GERD and the successfulness of the election are the two major milestones that have changed the political landscape with perspective previous perception of the outside forces.
