President Sahle-Work discusses with IOM DG Amy Pope

Addis Ababa, October 10, 2023 (FBC) – President Sahle-Work Zewde received the Director-General of UN-International Organization of Migration (IOM) Ms. Amy E. Pope.

The DG said her inaugural visit since she took office recently is to Ethiopia because it is the seat of African Union and that the country can be a key partner.

The President emphasized that efforts need to be redoubled in assisting the 4 millions displaced persons. She also informed the DG Ethiopia’s plan to organize a regional ministerial meeting on migration.

Expressing her gratitude to the President for the warm welcome accorded to her, Ms. Pope reiterated that she is committed to strengthening the good relationship between the UN Migration Agency and the Government of Ethiopia.

“Our partnership ensures that migration continues to provide opportunities for all,” she emphasized.

Since her arrival in Addis Ababa, Amy Pope has already held discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, Minister of Labor and Skills, Ms. Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ms. Ergogie Tesfaye, Chairperson of African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, UN Ethiopia Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov and other officials on issues pertaining to migration governance, cooperation and support.
