Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration deliberating on gender, diaspora participation on dev’t

Addis Ababa, March 15, 2023 (FBC) – The 4th Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration which kicked off on Monday in Addis Ababa has continued focusing on various regional cross cutting issues.

Countries are discussing the activities they have undertaken on gender and diaspora participation and the challenges they have faced in the process.

Activities carried out to increase women’s self-confidence and capacity, conflict management, negotiations, documentation of human right violations, humanitarian assistance and services in destination areas are among the topics being discussed by the participants.

Topics related to measures taken to enhance collaboration with national private sector actors to help them better understand gender dynamics, roles and norms have also been discussed.

Ministry of Labor and Skills has indicated that the forum will broadly advise on the activities carried out to support the positive role of the women diaspora network in the development of their countries of origin.

It is expected that further discussions will be held on money transfers, direct investment, capital market investment, charity and tourism, human resources and knowledge transfer.

IOM representatives and government ministers from 11 countries are participating in the forum which is focused on benefits of safe migration for sustainable development, while enhancing the protection of migrant workers.
