Senior Advisor lauds role of National Defense Force in humanitarian efforts in Tigray

Addis Ababa, May 10, 2021 (FBC) – Senior Advisor at the National Risk Disaster Management Commission, Muluneh Woldemariam commended participation of the National Defense Force in delivery of humanitarian assistance in Tigray region.

The war waged by the terrorist TPLF against the national army inflicted immense property damage and humanitarian crisis in Tigray region where the government has been undertaking a wide range of humanitarian and rehabilitation activities.

Regarding delivery of the humanitarian assistance in the region, the senior advisor said the government has addressed 4.5 million people in need in the region during the first round humanitarian action, and now reached 2.7 million in the ongoing second version drive.

Government has covered 70pct of the humanitarian need in the region while 30 percent is has been rendered by international partners, he said.

Unfettered access announced by the government has enabled international organizations to cover 86pct of the need, the advisor said, appreciating the participation of the National Defense Force in supporting the delivery.

The health, educational and agricultural sectors and public service institutions have been restored to normal as TPLF armed forces surrendered to the national army have concluded refreshment session and joined the security sector, according to the advisor.

The role of the National Defense Force is indispensible in the overall humanitarian efforts underway in the region, he added.
