Tigray region grants amnesty for 1,568 prisoners amid coronavirus

Addis Ababa, August 14, 2020 (FBC) – Tigray Regional State has granted amnesty for 1,568 prisoners as part of measures to curb coronaviurs pandemic.

Head of Tigray Region Bureau of Security and Administration, Tekieu Mitku said the release of the prisoners is aimed to support efforts underway to contain spread COVID 19 in the region.

The head said the prisoners who are charged with crimes including murder, rape and illegal human trafficking have not benefited from the pardon.

The region has so far released prisoners on March and April this year owing to the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
