Works underway to recover stolen public funds: Attorney General

Addis Ababa, December 18, 2019 (FBC) – The Federal Attorney General of Ethiopia has said that works are underway to repatriate stolen public wealth.

More public wealth had been diverted to foreign countries in various methods by government officials and their affiliate investors.

While presenting his office’s 11-month report to the parliament last fiscal year, Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye said an agreement had been reached with some countries to recover stolen funds.

Zinabu Tunu, public relations head at the Attorney General office told FBC that the name of individuals and countries where the stolen funds had been stashed are already identified.

A directorate has been established to recover the funds, Zinabu said, adding works are also underway to bring to justice those who took part in these crimes.

Due to its complexity, the process of recovering the funds needs more time, Zinabu said, adding his office all make public the final results of the investigation once it is completed.

According to him, his office had recovered over 95 billion birr stolen public funds last Ethiopia fiscal year and more than 35 million birr during the past three months.
