AU allocates over $100mn for IDPs

Addis Ababa, February 7, 2020 (FBC) -The African Union (AU) has put aside over $100 million to assist forced and internal displacement people (IDPs) across the continent.

Briefing journalist at the AU’s headquarter in Addis Ababa today, AU’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Minata Samate Cessouma said forced displacement has become a pressing issue in Africa.

Noting that the continent hosts over one-third of the global forced displacement population, the fund will help to assist those refugees in Africa, she noted.

“It will be supporting for refugees and displaced persons as we are talking of 34 conflicts in the world, out of which 14 of them are in Africa,” the Commissioner stated.

She added that the money could consider as a peace fund and will be used for refugees related to conflict resolution, prevention, reconciliation, as well as reconstruction.
