Efforts forging ahead to control prevalence of malaria in Southwest Ethiopia region

Addis Ababa, December 30, 2022 (FBC) – The Public Health Institute of the Southwest Ethiopia Peoples’ Region has announced that efforts are being made to control the spread of malaria in the region.

The Director of the Institute, Tamrat Bogale, in an exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, reminded that malaria epidemic has occurred in all zones in 42 woredas of the region.

He stated that Bench Sheko Zone and Sheka Zone have recorded a high number of patients compared to other zones, indicating that 2.7 million people in the region are at risk of malaria.

With this, he stated that since the outbreak of malaria in the region, various preventive measures have been carried out and are still forging ahead.

In particular, he mentioned that efforts have been made to distribute mosquito net to the public, chemical spraying and campaigns, as well as conducting various awareness raising platforms. The director indicated that there is a shortage of chemicals.

Tamrat said that although the spread of malaria has decreased in some areas due to the efforts being made in the region, it is not enough.

He underscored that the federal government is working hard to prevent the spread of malaria in the region.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Health-Ethiopia a month ago, a high number of malaria patients have been reported in various areas of the country, especially in the development areas of the Amhara region, some parts of the Oromia region, and in various districts of the South and Southwest Ethiopian People’s Region.
