Elnet Foundation unveils motorcycle ambulance program to back rural healthcare services in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, February 6, 2025 (FMC) – The Elnet Foundation, in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport and Logistics, has successfully launched an event to showcase its ground-breaking Eezer Motorcycle Ambulance Program in Addis Ababa. The event, which drew high-ranking government officials, highlighted the foundation’s commitment to addressing transportation gaps in the health sector and promoting maternal and child care services in rural areas.

Speaking at the event, Elnet Foundation’s CEO and Founder, Jessica Hedman, emphasized that the program aims to provide an innovative solution for women living in rural areas to access affordable transportation alternatives while seeking maternal and child care services.

 

The motorcycle ambulance service has already been introduced in several African countries, including Kenya and Burundi, resulting in promising achievements. Ethiopia is now part of the foundation’s efforts to support its health system, with the introduction of the service being one of many initiatives. She announced other projects including installation of mobile clinics in various parts of the country and a school feeding program in Bishoftu town, Oromia Region.

 

In his remarks, Health State Minister Dr. Dereje Duguma commended the initiative, stating that the motorcycle ambulance will serve as an alternative solution to address health issues related to the lack of ambulances in various parts of the country. Dr. Dereje noted that Ethiopia is aggressively working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal for maternal and child health, with a target of reducing the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030, mentioning the initiative as supporting to this endeavor.

Transport and Logistics State Minister Berho Hassen also expressed support for the program, highlighting its potential to provide emergency healthcare services for those affected by car accidents, in addition to supporting the transportation sector in maternal and child care services.

After trial operations, a number of motorcycle ambulances will be distributed to health posts across the country, offering free services to those in need. This initiative demonstrates the Elnet Foundation’s dedication to improving healthcare access in rural areas and supporting the government’s efforts to promote maternal and child care services.
