Ethiopia ardent proponent of principles of UN Charter: MoFA

Addis Ababa, October 24, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia, as one of the founding members of the UN, would always be an ardent proponent of the principles of the UN Charter, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, Minister of State for Political and Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said.

State Minister Ambassador Mesganu took part in the commemoration of the 78th United Nations Day held today at the premises of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa today.

In addressing the gathering, Ambassador Mesganu reiterated that Ethiopia, as one of the founding members of the UN, would always be an ardent proponent of the principles of the UN Charter.

The State Minister also stressed that Ethiopia has been a proud and profound voice of multilateral diplomacy in the UN system, and pledged to advance the unique partnership between the UN and Africa. In addition, he expressed Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting and strengthening its cooperation with UNECA.

Ambassador Mesganu further called upon the international community to recommit to the spirit of the UN Charter, and to meaningful and urgent reforms of the current global architecture.

High-level UN officials and representatives from the African Union also addressed the gathering.

The 78th UN Day celebration gathering was attended by Ethiopian government representatives, UN staff, African Union, Diplomatic Missions and Permanent Representatives accredited in Addis Ababa as well as young people in Ethiopia.

Marking this year’s UN Day, Secretary-General António Guterres called for strong commitment with hope and determination “to build the better world of our aspirations”.

“The United Nations is a reflection of the world as it is – and an aspiration of the world we know it can be. It is our responsibility to help build that world of peace, sustainable development and human rights for all. I know we can do it,” Mr. Guterres noted.

“On this United Nations Day, let us commit with hope and determination to build the better world of our aspirations. Let us commit to a future that lives up to the name of our indispensable organization. We are a divided world. We can and must be united nations,” the Secretary-General’s message further reads.
