Ethiopia cementing ties with African nations on a strong foundation

Addis Ababa, April 28, 2023 (FBC) – Ambassador Meles Alem, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, gave a biweekly briefing to the media today focusing on the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen.

The visit of DPM and FM Demeke Mekonnen to Tanzania, Comoros, Burundi, and Uganda created the opportunity to explain Ethiopia’s  journey to solidify its peace and strengthen ties with Africa, the Spokesperson has said.

Ambassador Meles Alem stated that the DPM and FM Demeke Mekonnen’s visits to African countries are indicative of Ethiopia’s interests to further solidify its diplomatic base in Africa.

He also reiterated that Ethiopia’s major role in the Pan-African Movement, contributed significantly to the independence of African countries, and is a leading actor in the formation and strengthening of African unity and the African Union, adding that Africans also provided principled support to Ethiopia when Ethiopia needed them.

Meles said that Demeke’s trip to African countries is also an effort to strengthen and expand our relationships with African friends.

The Spokesperson said that the DPM and FM’s trip to four African countries was an opportunity to create cooperation and understanding on the GERD file too. Ethiopia explained its unwavering commitment to resume the AU-led tripartite negotiations, he said.

Regarding Invest Ethiopian 2023 Forum, Amb. Meles stated that the investment forum in which many international companies are participating in Ethiopia is a clear indication that the country is turning its attention to economic diplomacy, which is being given priority while consolidating the Peace Agreement.

Discussing the telephone conversations of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with the leaders of SAF and RSF, Ambassador Meles said it is a historic continuity in the relations between the two countries, demonstrating that Ethiopia is on the side of the Sudanese people in any situation.
