Ethiopia, Comoros ink agreement to bolster diplomatic relations

Addis Ababa, April 25, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia and the Union of the Comoros have signed an agreement to further strengthen their diplomatic relations, FBC sources confirm.

Ethiopian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, arrived in Moroni, Comoros today, as part of his visit to four African countries.

DPM & FM Demeke had a fruitful discussion with the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani on bilateral and continental issues. He also conveyed the message of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to the President of Comoros.

Demeke mentioned that the Pretoria Peace Agreement, which was signed on the principle of “African solutions to African problems,” is being fully implemented, further highlighting its current status.

He said that issues pertaining to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) should be resolved through the tripartite dialogue between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.

Demeke emphasized that President Azali, being the current Chairperson of the African Union, has a leading role in realizing the tripartite dialogue.

The President of the Union of the Comoros expressed his satisfaction with the peaceful situation in Ethiopia.

He indicated that bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and Comoros can be strengthened in the fields of agriculture and fish development.

The president said that he will work to resume the tripartite negotiations regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

It is stated that the two sides also called for the security situation in Sudan to be resolved through dialogue.
