Ethiopia vows to take a lead in Red Sea Initiative to combat piracy in East Africa

Addis Ababa, June 1, 2022 (FBC) – Ethiopia reiterated to play a leading role in the Red Sea Initiative to combat piracy in the East African region.

Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission, Demelash Gebremichael attended a conference organized by INTRPOL to evaluate the implementation of the Red Sea Initiative.

Officials of the Red Sea Initiative briefed Commissioner General Demelash on the activities being carried out under the umbrella of the project.

Commissioner General Demelash, for his part, commended the role of the Red Sea Initiative in enhancing partnership and countering the maritime piracy in the region.

He said Ethiopia is working hard to tackle arms and trafficking. He added that Ethiopia will assume chairmanship of the East Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCO) in 2023, pledging commitment of the nation to take a lead in combating maritime piracy in the region.
