Ethiopia working with Sudan, South Sudan to address border issues through dialogue

Addis Ababa, March 28, 2023 (FBC) – In his address at the 11th Ordinary Session of the House of Peoples Representatives, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the government is closely working with governments of Sudan and South Sudan to address border issues with the two countries through dialogue.

Ethiopia and Sudan have been claiming border issues for the past 60 and 70 years and this is serving as a source of the current problems, the Premier noted.

The border issue with Sudan has occurred because demarcation has not been undertaken between the borders of the two countries.

The Ethiopia-Sudan Joint Ministerial Committee has been established to oversee the activities underway to resolve the situation through peaceful dialogue, the Prime Minister said, adding this will help demarcate the boundary between the country and bring a durable solution to the problem.

Regarding the situation with South Sudan, the Prime Minister said that the country has no intention and is not in a position to invade the land of Ethiopia.

The situation occurred when some pastoralists crossed the boundary of Ethiopia with their some 20,000 cattle in the pretext of the drought condition in the area, he said.

Consultations have been undertaken with pastoralists of South Sudan to address the situation, the Premier added.
