High-level consultation meeting on “Human Rights-based Durable Solutions for (IDPs) in Ethiopia” kicks off

Addis Ababa January 25, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Human Right Commission (EHRC) is conducting a high-level consultation meeting under the theme “Beyond Good Intentions: Search for Human Rights-based Durable Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ethiopia” from January 25-26, 2023 at Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to EHRC’s advisory sent to FBC Digital, the high-level consultation meeting brings together key national and international actors with the overall objective to: ‘Strategize and mobilize political will and resources to ensure durable solutions for IDPs and host communities through strengthening the government’s capacity and action’.

The advisory adds that the meeting is expected to advocate the Ethiopian government to develop and implement whole-of government strategy that is guided by a clear legal framework and the adoption of the draft proclamation on the protection and Assistance of IDPs in Ethiopia with the ultimate aim of advocating for strong legal base guiding the durable solution efforts.

The high-level meeting is also consultation platform with national authorities and international actors for increased attention to durable solution effort, EHRC added.

Representatives of Displacement affected communities, Government, UN agencies, International non-governmental organization, International Financial Institutions, private sector, academia, civil society organizations, development agencies, diplomatic missions and other relevant actors are participating in the High-level consultation meeting, EHRC stated.

It is to be recall that Ethiopia has made a major stride in recognizing the need to protect the rights and wellbeing of IDPs by ratifying the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa, (Kampala Convention).
