Impacts of global disasters should be a wake-up call to Africa to rethink dev’t paradigm: Finance Minister

Addis Ababa, March 20, 2023 (FBC) – Natural and manmade disasters must serve as a wake-up call for Africa to revisit its development paradigm with a focus on home-grown solutions, said Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance of Ethiopia.

In his remarks at the ongoing 55th African Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Ahmed noted that the weight of the impacts of COVID-19, the Ukraine-Russian War, and Climate Change on Africa should be an alarm call for the continent to rethink its development paradigm.

ECA’s 55th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development is being held in Addis Ababa since March 15. It is stated that the Conference of Ministers will conclude tomorrow.

The theme of the fifty-fifth session of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is “Fostering recovery and transformation in Africa to reduce inequalities and vulnerabilities”.
