More than 3.2mln citizens in drought-hit Somali region need urgent food aid: EDRMC

Addis Ababa, March 12, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) has announced that more than 3.2 million citizens need urgent food aid due to drought in Somali region.

According to the Public Relations Director of EDRMC, Debebe Zewde, the drought that hit nine of the 11 zones in the Somali region is causing severe impact to people and their cattle.

Excluding the latest survey, more than 3.2 million citizens need urgent assistance in the region due to the drought, he noted.

The PR Director indicated that the number of beneficiaries may increase when the new survey being conducted in the region is completed.

Debebe told Fana Broadcasting Corporate’s Melaku Gedif that the World Food Program (WFP) is providing support to citizens affected by drought in the region.

He emphasized that the number of beneficiaries is high and increasing day by day and that more urgent support is needed.

Hence, the official urged government organizations, NGOs, local and international partners, celebrity figures and Diasporas to support the drought-affected citizens in the region.
