Official highlights Ethiopia’s significant strides towards inclusive prosperity over the past years

Addis Ababa, January 22, 2025 (FMC) – In her engagement with the latest episode of the ‘Ethiopia in Focus’ Dialogue, The Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa (PhD), highlighted the country’s significant strides towards inclusive prosperity in the past six years, citing various initiatives and reforms that have improved social, economic, and environmental conditions across the nation.

The minister explained that the steps taken by the government over the past years have ensured social inclusion by recording inclusive and participatory growth in all fields. Notably, a new education policy was formulated and implemented in an inclusive manner, taking into account international and national contexts, and has brought about tangible changes.

Fitsum also mentioned that efforts have been made to renovate primary schools and build new classrooms in a participatory manner, enabling them to serve the community. Additionally, economically disadvantaged sections of society have benefited from health services through the health insurance system, ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare.

Furthermore, the government has implemented policies to increase productivity and ensure inclusiveness of business enterprises in the middle and low-income groups through the provision of finance and land. People-oriented policies have been formulated to help citizens overcome poverty and ensure food security, with significant investments being made in the agricultural sector.

The production and productivity of the agricultural sector have increased for the first time in the country’s history, with high yields in major crops such as wheat production in Ethiopia. The ‘Lemmat Tirufat’ or the Bounty of Baskets Initiative has also been implemented to transform the food system by increasing the productivity of honey, meat, milk, and eggs, yielding impressive results.

Reforms in urban agriculture, gender, urban housing development, infrastructure, digital economy, and financial institutions have also ensured social inclusion and laid the foundation for ensuring the overall prosperity of the country.
