PM Abiy launches annual low-cost houses construction in the capital

Premier says construction of new residential complex under low-cost housing initiative in Aware area to be completed in September

Addis Ababa, May 23, 2024 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today launched the site clearing for construction and renovation of shanty houses under the ‘low-cost housing’ initiative in Aware area of Addis Ababa city.

“Today may mark the last demolition we will undertake in the Aware area, which is rapidly transforming through our low-cost housing initiative launched six years ago,” the Prime Minister stated in a social media post.

He mentioned that the living environment in the area has been problematic, with shanty houses and inadequate toilet facilities for residents. “We will complete construction of this new residential complex in September, creating a conducive and green environment, and elevating the standard of living.”

He emphasized that this initiative benefits not only the impoverished but also real estate developers in the area. “Through this project, we have witnessed and harnessed the spirit of continuity. Aware is a clear symbol of continuity showing that through continuous cultivation of what we have commenced, we can transform a neighbourhood and uplift its residents.”

PM Abiy also confirmed that this year’s construction of low cost housing has been partially supported by the VISA Foundation.

The premier extended his call to others to follow suit such goodwill to contribute for the initiative. “I take this opportunity to encourage other similar establishments and philanthropists to extend their giving hands without being fatigued.”
