Tanzania Pardons 1,789 Ethiopian prisoners

Addis Ababa, January 25, 2021 (FBC) – Tanzania President John Magufuli has pardoned 1,789 Ethiopian prisoners jailed for entering the country illegally.

The release of the inmates is a result of talks held in Chato on Monday between the visiting Ethiopian counterpart Sahle-Work Zewde and President Magufuli.

President Magufuli said both nations are devising ways to release the pardoned prisoners who entered on transit to an unknown destination.

The President added that his country is keen to learn from Ethiopia in the manufacturing of leather products.

President Magufuli said he believes President Sahle-Work’s visit will have a positive impact on the economies of the two countries.

President Sahle-Work and her accompanying delegation travelled to Tanzania this morning for an official working visit.

She is also expected to discuss with Magufuli on ways for the establishment of Nile Basin Commission.

Tanzania was among the leading countries in signing the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA), which outlines principles, rights and obligations for cooperative management and development of the Nile Basin water resources.

Other countries which signed the agreement include Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. The Government of Ethiopia ratified the CFA in 2013.
