Reforms on regional special forces started simultaneously in all regions: Gov’t

Addis Ababa, April 7, 2023 (FBC) – Reforms on regional special forces being implemented simultaneously on all regions, according to the FDRE Government Communication Service.

Minister of State for Communications, Selamawit Kasa, mentioned that the reforms carried out on the national defense forces so far aims on strengthening equipment, technology, manpower and all other necessary means.

For this reason, the national defense forces were able to permanently reverse the threat posed on the sovereignty of the country, the State Minister emphasized.

Selamawit mentioned that the study and preliminary preparations for the reforms being undertaken on regions’ special forces started a while ago.

Due to the efforts to reverse the threats posed on sovereignty of Ethiopia and permanently resolve the conflicts in some parts of the country, the findings recommended in the study were not implemented immediately, she underscored.

However, the State Minister stressed the need to build a strong and centralized army, mentioning that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) is the undisputed and last bastion of the nation.

She said that it is difficult to build a strong country without a strong security force for a country like Ethiopia, located in a region with contentious issues.

For this reason, she further emphasized that the proper organization of national security force is a national agenda.

Mentioning that the task of structuring and strengthening the national army is based on research, Selamawit recalled that following the research, practical steps have been taken to integrate regional special forces in different structures in line with the direction set by the government.

During her statement on current state of affairs, the Minister of State mentioned that the regional special forces have contributed immensely to reverse dangers posed on the sovereignty and unity of the country from different actors, adding that the government is very grateful for their contributions and sacrifices.

The government presented options of integration to regional special forces members and their needs will be respected, Selamawit mentioned, adding that the government will implement reforms based on the options presented, she said.

It is also mentioned that integrating into ENDF for regions’ special forces should be the primary choice, and is also a national call.

The statement pointed out that there are other options; such as a return to civilian life, or join in the regional security institutions. Arrangements have been made for resettlement and necessary support for those who chose to return to civilian life.

The State Minister underlined that there are gaps in some areas due to lack of timely communication and not understanding the purpose of the reform properly.

Therefore, she emphasized that it is a work that can only be done through proper communication.

It is also stated that it should be understood that the reform has nothing to do with disarmament of regional special forces.

Selamawit further added that the process will be carried out carefully and the national defense forces have been deployed in areas with security threats and are carrying out the work.

In relation to the implementation of the agreement with TPLF, Selamawit said that the works are being undertaken in line with the agreement reached.

She underlined that it is important ignore false and destructive reports regarding the reform on regions’ special forces.
