PREVIEW: 2023/24 Ethiopian PL season kicks off on Sunday

Addis Ababa, September 30, 2023 (FBC) – The 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League season will kick off on Sunday, October 1, at Adama Science and Technology University Stadium where all 16 of the country’s top division football clubs camp in Adama city for a few weeks.

The league’s governing body, Ethiopian Premier League Share Company (EPLSC), confirmed that Adama Science and Technology University Stadium will host the opening fixtures of the new season of the country’s top division football competition.

On the curtain raiser matches of the new season, Adama City Football Club will face the newly promoted Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Football Club on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

On the same day, Sidama Coffee FC will play Ethiopian Coffee FC at 6:00 pm.

On the following week, October 6, 2023, newcomers Shashemene City FC take on Wolaita Dicha FC at 3:00 pm. The other newly promoted side Hambericho Durame FC will play against Dire-Dawa City FC on the same day at 6:00 pm.

On October 7, Hawasa City FC will face the 2020/21 season champions Fasil Kenema FC at 9:00 pm, whereas Hadiya Hosana FC will entertain Mechal FC later that day at 6:00 pm.

Reigning champions and a record 16 premier league titles winners Saint George FC will kick off their season in a match against Wolkite City FC on Sunday October 8 at 3:00 pm. The defending champions will look to leave behind their disappointing 7-0 aggregate defeat to Egypt’s Al Ahly in CAF Champions League Preliminary Round 2 matches.

Last season’s Ethiopian PL runners-up Bahir Dar City FC are looking to take their CAF Confederation Cup 2023/24 Preliminary Rounds impressive form into the new season as they play against Ethiopian Insurance FC in the last game of matchday 1 on October 8 at 6:00 pm. The Waves of Tana, BDFC, have lost last season’s title to St. George on the last day of the season. In their maiden outing of the continental football, Bahir Dar City FC have beaten Tanzania’s Azam FC on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate score over the two legs in CAF CC preliminary round 1 qualifiers. Moreover, in the preliminary round 2 first leg qualifiers, BDFC have beaten Tunisian giants Club Africain 2–0 at home on September 17th. The return leg is scheduled to be played on Sunday October 1 at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi at 6:00 pm.
