Ethiopian athletes to participate in three qualifying races in Budapest today  

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2023 (FBC) – On the fifth day of the 19th World Athletics Championship, Ethiopian athletes are lined up to participate in three different categories of qualifiers today.

In the women’s 800m qualifier, Ethiopia will be represented by Habtam Alemu, Worknesh Melese and Tigst Girma. It is noted that this category will be held in seven groups, where athletes who take the top three each group will register their place in the semi-final qualifiers which will be held tomorrow.

Meanwhile in the women’s 5000m qualifying round, the 10,000m gold medalist athlete Gudaf Tsegay, Medina Isa, 10,000m bronze medalist Ejigayehu Taye and Freweyni Haileu will represent Ethiopia this afternoon in Budapest.

It is noted that athletes that finish in top 8 from the two groups in the 5000m qualifiers will advance to the finals on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

The 5000m women’s qualifying race was initially scheduled to be held at 12:10 p.m., but the time was changed due to the hot temperature in the Hungarian capital, the world athletics governing body indicated.

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Ethiopia will be represented by Lomi Muleta, Simbo Alemayehu and Zerfe Wondmagegn. It will be held this evening at 8:53 pm. The top five athletes from each group in this race will qualify for the finals on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

Currently, Ethiopia occupies third place in the World Athletics Championship table with 6 medals (1 gold, three silver and two bronze medals), only behind the United States of America (12 medals) and Spain (2 gold). Spain sits second owing to the highest number of gold medals.
