Authority commends coffee training for boosting quality, productivity

Addis Ababa, January 8, 2024 (FBC) – The field training being given to farmers has been productive in improving the quality and productivity of coffee bean yields, according to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.

Approached by ENA, Coffee, Tea and Spices CEO at the Authority Fikadu Adefirs said various activities have been carried out over the past years to enhance coffee productivity and quality.

Following the measures being taken, the productivity and quality of coffee has been increased, he said.

According to him, the productivity of coffee has increased to 7.5 quintals per hectare from the previous 6 quintals on average.

Activities are also undertaken to cultivate 12 quintals per hectare and to enhance the quality of coffee to first and second level during the coming four years, he further pointed out.

In the coffee cultivation, treating acidic soil, disease prevention, improving input utilization and other activities are being carried out in a scientific manner, he said, adding strengthening the extension system is also being done in a project with the stakeholders.

The field training given to farmers has brought success in improving quality and productivity of coffee as the training has been given in six coffee producing regions.

Since the field training being given to farmers is crucial in improving the quality and productivity of coffee, he urged research institutes, universities and others to support the training.
