Building religious tolerance complements sustainable peace: Mayor

Addis Ababa, January 19, 2023 (FBC) – Building religious tolerance, absolute humility, servitude, and mutual respect is complementary to maintain lasting peace in Addis Ababa and in Ethiopia at large, said Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie.

Mayor Adanech extended her Timket best wishes to Christians gathered at Jan-Meda’s Epiphany celebration in Addis Ababa.

In her message, the Mayor said, “Timket (Epiphany) is a celebration to honour the day when Lord Jesus Christ was baptized by the hands of a mankind.”

She recalled that the festival is being celebrated in the Capital since yesterday in line with its religious values ​​through religious chants, worship, togetherness, and hymn.

The Mayor mentioned that the Timket (Ethiopian Epiphany) festival has been inscribe by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), adding that the it has become a festival for the whole of Ethiopia beyond the followers of the Orthodox Tewahedo faith.

Adanech confirmed that the Addis Ababa city administration has been working to ensure that religious and public holidays such as Timket are celebrated peacefully and will continue to do so in the future.

She thanked the residents of the Capital and the security forces of the City who contributed immensely to the peaceful celebration of the Timket festival.
