Ceramics factory producing 18,000m2 tiles/day to go operational soon: Ministry

Addis Ababa October 19, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure of Ethiopia (MoUI) revealed that a factory capable of producing 18,000 square meters of ceramic tiles per day will go operational soon.

Minister of State at the Ministry, Mr. Wondmu Seta, disclosed that efforts are in progress to manufacture ceramic tiles in Ethiopia through import substitution production system. According to him, KAM ceramic factory in Bishoftu town, Oromia region, which is being built at a cost of nearly 2 billion birr, will impact the import substitution production of ceramic tiles, in that regard.

In an exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Mr. Wondmu recalled that KAM Ceramic Product PLC has been importing and selling ceramic tiles and ceramic products for over 25 years in Ethiopia.

Indicating that the factory is being built to tap the potential in Ethiopia, the State Minister disclosed that upon completion of the construction, KAM Ceramics Factory will have the capacity to produce 18,000m2 of ceramic tiles per day.

He mentioned that it will be put into operation soon after completing certain infrastructures and supplying raw materials for industrial inputs.

Mentioning that the government is making efforts to attract new investments in the sector, Mr Wondmu also explained the expansion of such factories will ameliorate the import-dependent nature of the sector.

At present, 40 percent of the total construction input in the country is covered by domestic capacity, and it is planned to cover 80 percent of it in through domestic products in the next 7 years, the State Minister asserted.
