Children, GBV care center to be built in Dessie city with 50mln Birr: MoWSA

Addis Ababa, December 30, 2022 (FBC) – The FDRE Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ergogie Tefaye, laid a foundation stone in Dessie City to build a center that provides appropriate response and care to violence against women and children.

The Minister stated that a budget of 50 million birr has been earmarked for the construction of the center, revealing that the construction will be completed in four months.

The center, according to the Minister of MoWSA, will be built to respond to and prevent violence against children and women, recalling that women are victims of various conflicts.

She indicated that it will also provide psychological support to victims to recover and return to their normal lives.

Furthermore, the Minister also confirmed that a UNICEF-backed 8-room one-center service facility, built with 7.7 million Birr, was inaugurated in Woldia town, Amhara region.

She indicated that this center is said to provide prevention and response services to victims of gender-based violence.

According to the Minister, both projects are part of MoWSA’s 16-day initiative planned to build and support centers and enhance the capacity of those working in the centers.

It is stated that this is the 3rd center established in Amhara region, beside to Dessie and Bahir Dar. It was built temporarily to respond to the widespread violence against women and children in the recent conflict.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of State at MoWSA, Alemitu Umed, stated that efforts will be enhanced to stop violence against women and children in the country, to ensure proper treatment to victims, to provide proper care, and to provide psychological support.

She urged concerned bodies at all levels in governmental and non-governmental organizations to cooperate by giving appropriate response to women and children who experienced violence.
